A weekend at No. 38 The Park, Cheltenham

A few weekends ago Mr Kelly and I hopped in the car and headed to Cheltenham to check out one of Lucky Onion’s boutique hotels, No. 38 The Park. Mr and Mrs Smith has always been our go-to website for hotels. If you hate chains, love style and your worst nightmare is a giant monstrosity with over 300 rooms, Mr and Mrs Smith is right up your street. Handpicked boutique hotels from around the world, each of them offering something a little bit extra. We’re yet to be disappointed when we stay at one of their finds. No. 38 was no exception. From the minute you walk through the tile-clad foyer, you can understand why this beautiful townhouse was nominated as one of Mr and Mrs Smith’s best dressed hotels. Sink into one of the refurbished roll top baths, sip a G&T on the sunny patio or kick back on one of the many velvet sofas, this place really does feel like home.

After a very easy two hour drive from London, we pulled up outside the beautiful regency townhouse, right at the edge of a particularly pretty part of the lovely Pittville Park.

With no reception area, we walked through the front doors and immediately felt like we’d come home…

Or rather come to our home of dreams…

Tiles, feature fireplaces and chandeliers aplenty, as an avid reader of Elle Decor, this place is my idea of heaven. We were greeted with smiles, invited to have a look around and to make ourselves at home. We started out in the living room, resisting the urge write off the afternoon and settle in on one of the many squishy sofas with a good book…

Ending up in the beautiful dining room. With wooden table tops, beamed ceilings, original railway mirrors and sunlight streaming in through the skylights and floor to ceiling windows, this really is a special spot. When we arrived they were setting up for a baby shower later that day and I was already trying to find excuses to throw a party here myself.

There’s even a private honesty bar, complete with copper hanging lamps and red leather bar stools. Throw in a few of your favourite people and a couple of cocktails and you have yourself a perfect night.

We soaked up a bit of sunshine out on the terrace and ordered a couple of coffees. The weekend was off to a great start.

With no restaurant on site, we dragged ourselves away from our sun trap and walked the short walk into town to find a spot of lunch, making a house wish-list along the way…

And enjoying the tail end of the blossom season.

On the hotel’s recommendation we headed to Kindness & Co., a super cute cafe serving up Deliciously Ella style bowls of yummy salads.

And of course, poached eggs on toast. With avocado…

And with feta and chilli flakes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Both equally delicious.

We meandered through the city’s beautiful streets, enjoying the sunshine and popping in and out of the endless independent shops.

Having never visited Cheltenham before, within a matter of hours we were working out what the commute to London would be.

Who needs the tulip fields of Amsterdam when you can hop on the motorway and find these beauties in Cheltenham…

We headed to the high street…

And after a bit of retail therapy (sorry Mr Kelly!)…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And a couple of slices of salted caramel cake at Huffkins Tea Room (definitely worth indulging in – home baked by the waitress’ aunty, it’s to-die-for!)…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We headed back to base…

A fifteen minute walk easily turning into thirty minutes when you throw in some sunshine, a blossom addict and a camera…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We were shown up to our room for the night. Words can’t really do it justice so I’ll let the photos do the talking…

Absolutely stunning, right?

With an equally beautiful en-suite…

Mr Kelly goes nuts for tiles. It was as if they knew he was coming…

Each of the thirteen bedrooms at No. 38 have been individually decorated. Hand painted wallpaper, jewel coloured throws and fancy artwork come as standard. However, don’t hesitate when you’re weighing up which room to book, go for an Excellent Room. When you’re lying back in your free-standing bath tub pouring in another scoop of 100 Acres bath salts, you’ll thank me.

Up next, dinner at the sister hotel, No. 131, and breakfast back at No. 38…
